Aswan, located on the west bank of the Nile River, it is a uncommon mix of Ancient Egypt and Nubian heritage, river and desert, rural village civic city.
Aswan used to be known as Swenett or Syene in the past, The southern city of Swenett was considered where Egypt "began” geographically, since ancient Egyptians located themselves around the Nile, which flows from the south to the north.
Swenett was used as a military outpost to protect Egypt from the south, as well as a commercial market center. The ancient land of Nubia was directly to the south of Aswan, reaching from modern-day southern Egypt into northern Sudan. Nubia became part of Egypt during the New Kingdom, and Nubian heritage and culture is crucial in Aswan until today.
A curious fact is that Aswan is one of the sunniest, driest cities in the world. However, the atmospheric conditions are also known for being a natural remedy for a variety of different lung diseases.
