Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic church, basilica and national shrine of Mexico in northern Mexico City. The sanctuary was built near the Tepeyac Hill, where it is believed that the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego Cuaulatoacin. Built in 1976, the new basilica housed the original head of Juan Diego, holding the image of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. One of the most important places of worship for Catholics, the basilica is visited by a million visitors every year, especially around December 12, when it is the feast of the Virgin Mary.
