Kilkenny Castle rises at a strategic height, from which a view of the passing River Nore is visible. The castle building is considered one of the priceless buildings in Ireland. It is the successor of the older wooden building that was built in the 12th century. The first stone fort on the site of today's castle was built by William Earl Marshall in 1213, when he was completing his castle. The property was a huge courtyard structure with a square shape, where an observation tower rose at each corner, where three of them managed to be preserved to this day. From 1391 to 1935, it belonged to the Butler family. Today, the palace, along with its sumptuous gardens, is open to the public.
