The Catholic cathedral is the third largest in the world after St. Peter" in Rome and "St. Pavel'' in London. In this place there was an ancient church, the remains of which can be seen in the basement of the basilica. A decision to build the cathedral was reached in 1289 and Arnolfo di Cambio was appointed.
The significant dome is the work of the architect Brunelleschi. With its height of 106 meters, it is accepted as a symbol of Florence. Below it is the 4-acre fresco "The Last Judgment". Green and white marble with numerous frescoes, sculptures and mosaics reflects the nature and richness of Tuscany. It is amazing that this architectural masterpiece was built with the most primitive construction tools presented in the museum and represents a combination of different architectural styles. On this square in 1334, Giotto designed the famous bell tower, 89 meters high.
