Today's royal palace was built in the period 1648-1655 and originally functioned as the municipality of Amsterdam. It is considered one of the most important cultural and historical sights of Amsterdam from the 17th century. The architect of this only secular monumental building in the city was Jacob van Kampen. The Royal Palace is located on Dam Square in the heart of the city. It was the home of King Louis Napoleon, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, from 1808 to 1813. From 1935 the building came under the rule of Queen Betarix for official ceremonies. Sometimes state guests also stay here.
