
Meknes is a city in the northern part of Morocco. The city is located 130 km from the capital city of Rabat and 60 km from the city of Fes. The place where Meknes is located was inhabited by the Romans. Among the Berbers, the city was known as Maknassa. In the period 1672-1727, Meknes was the capital of Morocco, which makes it one of the four Imperial cities of the country, along with Rabat, Marrakesh and Fez. Because of its rich history and culture, Meknes is under the protection of UNESCO.
Some of the popular sights of the city are: the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail (during his reign, the city of Meknes was the capital), the Bab Mansour Gate, as well as the Dar Jamai Museum, which exhibits items of traditional crafts, woodwork, carpets, ceramics and others.
