The historic Syntagma Square is the center of the political and economic life of the Greek capital. On one side of the square is the Hotel Grande Bretagne, and across from it is the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, behind which is the Parliament building. "Syntagma" square is also the shopping center of the city, next to it are two of the liveliest streets in the city - "Stadio" and "Ermu". During the excavations for the reconstruction of the subway, many remarkable archaeological remains were discovered. these artifacts date from the late Mycenaean period to the late Roman period (1100 BC - 300 AD). Today, some of them are displayed in specially made showcases at metro stations in the city.
