In the 13-14th century, the already existing Byzantine fortress was improved, and in the 15th century, the walls were rebuilt by the Venetians. In the 16th century, the construction of all protective structures by Venetian architects was again completed. After 1500, the fortress was used as a military and administrative center. Several buildings from the Venetian period have been preserved - the central gate, the prisons, etc. During the British protectorate (1815-1864), new protective structures and buildings, barracks, hospitals and the church "St. George".
This fortress is called Old in comparision to the New Fortress "Saint Mark", which was also built to protect the town from enemies and pirates.
