The Karl Theodor Bridge over the Neckar River in Heidelberg connects the old and new parts of the city and is known as the Old Bridge. In front of him at this place there were 8 wooden bridges, which were constantly destroyed by floods and fires. It was built in 1788 by order of Prince Karl Theodore, sandstone from the Neckar River valley was used for its construction. Today this bridge belongs to the most famous sights of Heidelberg and is one of the symbols of the city. Two statues of the sculptor Franz Konrad Link rise above the second and seventh column bases of the bridge. One depicts him as Carl Theodore and the other as Minerva.
