Kohlmarkt Street is located in the historic center of Vienna and connects to Michaelerplatz square (at the northern entrance of the Hofburg Palace) and Graben Street. Due to the large number of jewelry stores and designer boutiques, Kohlmarkt is considered the most luxurious street in Vienna. In addition, there is a "Demel" cafe-patisserie, known for its Sacher cakes.
The name of the street is due to the fact that in the past a regular coal market was held here. During the construction of the Hofburg Palace, manufacturers and traders of high-quality goods and luxury items settled in the street, which is located in close proximity to the new imperial residence.
Today, Kolmarkt is the most expensive shopping street in Austria - the average monthly rent here is around 400 euros per square meter.
