Ouranopolis was founded in the 4th century BC. by King Kassander, who gave him the name Prosphorion. It was founded around the Byzantine tower, on land belonging to the nearby Zigu Monastery. After the defeat in the Greco-Turkish War in 1922, the land was left to Greek refugees. Today Ouranopoli is a tourist place in Greece with 3000 inhabitants. The village is located on the northwestern coast of the Athos peninsula and is located about 135 km. southeast of Thessaloniki. A large part of the cruisers that circumnavigate Mount Athos stop for lunch in the village.
