The "Fraumunster" church is an evangelical reformation church that has become one of the symbols of Zurich. It was part of the female monastery of the same name, founded in 853 by King Ludwig II of Germany, who gave the land on which the monastery is located to his daughter Hildegrad. During the entire existence of the monastery, women from rich aristocratic families were lured into it. The monks lived according to the rules of the Benedictine Order, but had the right to leave it and marry.
After the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved and the church and its lands became the property of the city of Zurich. In 1728, the southern tower of the building was demolished, and in 1732, the northern one was raised by several more meters. the last reconstructions took place in 1911. The church has the greatest authority in the entire canton.
